Zambia has an 11 percent prevalence rate and grapples with an estimated 1.4 million people living with HIV. In 2022, an estimated 28,000 new HIV infections were recorded, with 50% occurring among adolescents aged 10 to 19, (CIDRZ 2023). Despite the alarming numbers and challenges, targeted interventions and increased awareness have contributed to a significant decline in new infections over the past decade. (men, women, youth, children)
Zambia’s commendable progress includes expanding access to HIV testing and counseling, Anti-retro-viral Treatment (ART) and the availability of preventive medication such as PrEP and PEP. Currently, over 1 million of the people diagnosed with HIV in Zambia have access to life-saving medications, enhancing both their health and preventing further transmission, (WHO, 2022).
In addition to medical measures, Zambia emphasizes comprehensive sexuality education and safe practices, particularly among adolescents, to empower young people with knowledge, reduce new infections, and combat stigma and discrimination associated with HIV.
As we commemorate World AIDS Day in 2023, we must reinvigorate our fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic through sensitization and action, because the fight is a collective and continuous effort that affects everyone.

This Zambian statistics among the teenagers and adolescent are quite alarming. In order to reduce the alarming statistics, Zambia should introduce comprehensive sexuality education because this will give the teenagers knowledge about morales, issue of sexuality, hygiene and many more. Wholly agree, we must band together in the final push to completely eradicate this scourge once and for all. Great strides have been made yes, but there still remains vestiges of negative connotations relating to this pandemic and people affected by it.

Lot of young people are really getting infected and it’s really good that our health sector is doing a great good at health education and providing treatment in order to reduce the rate at which HIV /AIDS is spreading .
